Foods and Nutrition I, is a comprehensive course that teaches students about general nutrition, food composition, and meal preparation. Foods I enhances a students ability to make healthy food choices by providing cooking techniques that will assist in food preparation.

Overview

Students enrolled in Food and Nutrition 1 will receive rigorous and relevant learning experiences as they study the principles of nutrition for individual and family health, fitness, and wellness. Students will gain knowledge and experiences in nutrition, food safety and sanitation, kitchen work centers, meal preparation, table service and etiquette, and nutrition-related careers. Critical thinking and practical problem solving are emphasized in a co-curricular approach that incorporates principles of mathematics, science, writing, communications, and economics. The ServSafe® employee certification provides increased marketability and could be available to students. Foods and Nutrition 1 is a prerequisite for Foods and Nutrition 2. Inclusion of the Family and Consumer Sciences student organization, Family, Careers, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), greatly enhances this curriculum and may be available to students. More information will be given in class.

Instruction

Foods & Nutrition I will be conducted as a hybrid course. Instruction will be provided in class by the instructor as well as online through the virtual classroom for the course. Students are expected to submit all assignments in the virtual classroom for the course unless otherwise explained by the instructor. Students will be provided notes, resources, assignments and discussion prompts for the purpose of learning. Students will be held accountable for assignments provided via the virtual classroom.

Rules, Requirements, & Procedures

Students are expected to enjoy the course as well as obtain applicable skills that will enhance their life outside of the classroom. Students should be mindful that they are in a learning environment and all rules should be followed to ensure mutual respect and student safety.

Classroom Rules:

  • Follow all school rules
  • Respect yourself, others, and school property at all times.
  • Use materials and equipment wisely and only after instruction from the teacher.
  • Come to class prepared with necessary materials for the day such as paper, pencils, books, pens, notebooks, and computer.
  • Work hard and maintain a good attitude.
  • Stay focused and on task throughout the class session. NO SLEEPING
  • Ask for what you want. Do not take it!
  • Before you assume, just ask.
  • Students may use the restroom during the first 5 and last 5 minutes of class only.
  • Students must sign in an out to use the restroom.
  • Sit in your assigned seat.
  • Ask permission if you would like to get out of your seat.
  • Clean up after yourself. Do not leave trash around the room.
  • Follow all computer usage guidelines.

 

Computer Usage Rules:

  • No food or drinks should be consumed in the classroom.
  • No horseplay.
  • Use electrical outlets in the back of the room to charge your device.
  • Follow the light system red- no computer (testing) yellow- use computers during instruction with the classroom teacher [green- use the computer for the completion of assignments]
  • Do not leave your device un attended.
  • No gaming or Internet surfing is permitted unless teacher directed.

Laboratory Rules:

  • No horse play while in the lab.
  • Wash hands before, during, & after all labs.
  • Wear close-toed shoes, aprons, and hairnets while in the lab.
  • Sanitize before beginning the lab and after the lab.
  • Read and execute the recipe provided by using all ingredients.
  • No nail polish or acrylic nails while in lab.
  • Follow all clean up procedures.

Classroom Procedures:

  • Be seated in your assigned seat at the bell. This means not in the hall, at a friend’s seat, or standing at the door.
  • Log into http://www.schoology.com and begin assignments. If the focus assignment requires a handout, please get it from the shelf by the door.
  • Have nametag visible for review as roll is called.
  • Answer with present when the roll is called.
  • Reference notes & have them visible on your computer during teacher directed instruction.
  • Provide positive feedback and informative thoughts during lecture.
  • Complete all independent assignments and submit them on time by the end of the week.
  • Pack up and leave the classroom only at the bell.

 

Consequences:

1ST offence- warning and or separation from the class, termination of lab & no opportunity to receive credit

2nd offence- separation, after school detention and parent contact, termination of lab & no opportunity to receive credit

3rd offence- referral to principal

Evaluation / Grading

Major Assignments (Exams & Projects) = 60%

Independent Class Assignments = 20%

Class Participation = 10%

Cooperative Group Work= 10%

 

Make Up Assignments: Students will have 5 days from the date of their absence to make up missing work, such as test, exams, in class assignments, and projects. Group work cannot be made up if missed and there is no alternate assignment due to the nature of the learning experience. All assignments except major test / quizzes will be located in the virtual classroom (http://www.schoology.com). Additional supplements provided in class will be located in the makeup box. Students must sign up on the makeup calendar to select a date and time to receive additional help on assignments and or complete a missed test. Students must arrange a time with the teacher to make up a test within the first five days that they return from being absent. A time can be selected by signing up on the in class calendar. It is your child’s responsibility to contact the teacher about missing assignments. Please check the FCS / assignments section of the Hartsville High School website and http://www.schoology.com for general course assignments.

 

Late Assignments: I will not accept late work. Part of being a responsible student means that you care enough about your grade to make the effort submit your assignments via your virtual classroom by the end of the school week. There will be exceptions made for special projects.

 

Incomplete Assignments: Appropriate amounts of time will be given for each student to complete in class assignments and projects. The assignment will be graded in its entirety including the parts that are not complete and a grade will be granted.

FCCLA

FCCLA is a non-profit national career and technical student organization for students that are enrolled in Family and Consumer Sciences courses or have been in the past. Involvement in FCCLA prepares students to be effective leaders, creative thinkers, critical thinkers, better communicators, and knowledgeable of FCS related occupations.

Students are encouraged to participate and be part of it! More information will be given in class.

Each student is given an opportunity to learn a wide variety of skills that pertain to how he or she will manage their life and career in the future. It is my hope that each student achieves a high level of success in this course. Parents please sign and return the attached form that indicates that you have seen the course syllabus and understand what will be taught during the course as well as rules and expectations for your child.

After reading the syllabus in its entirety, fill out the form below. Please sign, date and return the bottom portion of the syllabus for my records. The signed returned portion of the syllabus will count as your child’s first daily grade. This syllabus is due back the day after it is received. The student will not get until the end of the week to turn in this particular assignment.

School Issued Materials

Students are issued Mac Book Air’s and Textbooks for the course. Each student is expected to have his or her assigned textbook and computer each day. Instruction will be provided via the virtual classroom that is set up for the course Text books are used as a reference source. Assignments will be provided that require the use of the textbook.
