Course Description

Students will have a better understanding of the 16 Career Clusters, Career Choices, goal setting, and other general information concerning career development.

 

Expectations and Goals

Students will participate in all activities that will be covered in class.  Students will complete written assignments when given.  Students will keep all materials covered in a "marble" notebook.  Assignments for this class will be graded.  The grades earned will be given to the English teacher.

 

Course Materials

Each student MUST have a "marble" notebook that will be brought to class EACH time their class comes for Career Development.  Students should also bring something to write with to each class.

 

Course Schedule

Lesson 1: Go over classroom rules and syllabus explaining what will be covered

Lesson 2:  Interest Inventory.  Power Point of Career Clusters. Career Clusters Review Sheet. Worksheet B.

Lesson 3: How well do you know yourself?  Class discussion; Worksheet A

Lesson 4: Weekly planner; class discussion; WorksheetB

Lesson 5: Organization Skills; 7 Ways to Organize Your Materials; class discussion

Lesson 6: Study Skills Power Point; class discussion.  Student will write reflection on topic.

Lesson 7: Tips for taking notes; class discussion

Lesson 8: H.E.A.R.T (H – How much do I already know about the topic; E – Establish a purpose for studying; A – Ask questions as you study, R – record answers to your questions, T – test yourself

Class discussion; students will write reflection on topic.

Lesson 9 & 10:  Students will individually make a poster listing and illustrating 10 things that they have learned in career development this school year.

Lesson 3: Brief review of Lesson 2. Career Research worksheet #15.

Lesson 4: Goal setting with class discussion. What is a career goal? (define) Worksheet #8.

Lesson 5: Characteristics of Successful People with class discussion. Worksheet #30.

Lesson 6:  Students will evaluate their own personal attitudes with class discussion. Discuss employer expectations.  Handout A&C.

Lesson 7: School and work - work and school: How are they alike and how are they different? Class discussion.

Lesson 8: Differences between a job, occupation, and career with class discussion. Students will define each in their own words and show an example of each.

Lesson 9:  Family job tree. Students will label job tree and determine if it is a job, occupation, or career. Worksheet D.

Lesson 10 & 11: Students will make a poster, list 10 things that they have learned in career development this school year and include illustrations for each point listed.

Course Description

Students will have a better understanding of career planning, self-appraisal, work values, social etiquette.

Students will complete KeyTrain modules in order to better prepare them for WorkKey assessment

Students will have a better understanding of life skills; communication skills, checks and bank accounts, understanding credit cards, budgeting, become aware of nontraditional employment.  Students will write a “mini” essay on entrepreneurs or Career Women.
