Primary Objectives

South Carolina High School Student Performance Indicators

  1. Demonstrate competency in at least two movement forms.
  2. Design and develop an appropriate physical fitness program to achieve a desired level of personal fitness.
  3. Participate regularly in health enhancing physical activity outside the physical education class.
  4. Meet the gender and age group health related physical fitness standard as published by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.

 

Pace of Units

Students will spend approximately half the course on one movement form and half the course on the other movement form depending upon the skill level of the class.  Fitness will be addressed throughout the unit.  Classes will be conducted in a classroom dealing with principles of training, performance indicator 2 and 3, health, and personal fitness plan. 

 

Timeline of activities:

  • Fitnessgram will be given the last week of the nine week period.
  • Out of School Activity which consists of 6 weeks, three times per week, 20-30 minutes of activity documented.

 

Assessment tools:

Students, peers, and teacher will assess rubrics, check list, game performance, written test, and homework assignments.

 

Grading Scale

  • 25% Projects (health, outside activities, PI2, and personal fitness plans)
  • 38% Movement Form and Fitness (The student may participate in that days activity or walk at a fast pace around the gym or field to receive credit for that days activity.)
  • 37% Dress out (Is graded weekly and the first time they do not dress for the week their grade will be a 50, the next time in that week will be a 25, and a zero after that)

  • Fitnessgram (If the student refuses to do any part of the fitnessgram we WILL NOT drop the lowest grade.  As a result their grade will be lower.)

Health

Unit 1: Reproductive Health/Pregnancy Prevention

Essential Question: What role does a responsible individual have in a healthy reproductive system and the

           prevention of unplanned pregnancy?

  • What are the non-prescriptive methods of birth control?
  • What are the prescriptive methods of birth control?
  • What is the risk of having unprotected sex?
  • How does the fertilized egg develop through pregnancy?
  • What are the stages of labor?
  • How do you maintain a healthy reproductive system?

Unit 2: Prevention and Control of Diseases

Essential Question: What are the measures of prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases?

  • What behavior will reduce the risks of infection with common communicable diseases?
  • What are the behaviors that will reduce the risks of sexually transmitted diseases?
  • How do lifestyles relate to chronic and degenerative diseases?
  • How do we view people with different kinds of diseases?
  • What is the purpose of immunization?

Unit 3: Substance Use and Abuse

Essential Question: How are lifestyles affected by the use and abuse of drugs?

  • What is the difference between drug use, drug misuse, and drug abuse?
  • What are the health risks of drugs?
  • What health problems are associated with tobacco use?
  • What problems are associated with the use of alcohol?

Unit 4: Safety and Accident Prevention

Essential Question: What basic techniques are needed for the prevention of accidents and the utilization of

                                   good safety procedures?

  • What safety rules should be followed for the home, school, and community?
  • What are the first aid procedures for handling emergencies?
  • What are the safety guidelines to follow for threatening weather conditions and natural disasters?
  • What are the guidelines for safety on wheels and water?

Unit 5: Mental and Emotional Health and Family Living

Essential Question: How does mental and emotional health relate to how we live with our families?

  • What are the characteristics of good mental and emotional health?
  • How does mental health relate to one’s self-concept?
  • How do we expressive feelings affect mental and emotional health?
  • How does family living contribute to positive mental health?

Policies for student achievement:

No Extra Credit will be given.  Students are expected to complete all assignments.  It is the student’s responsibility to make up any missed assignments within three days of returning to school.  Anything after those three days will not be accepted.  Teachers are available in the morning before school by appointments for extra help.

 

All students are to conduct themselves in a way that will allow learning to take place.  They are to enter my classroom ready to learn and not interfere with the learning of others.  We will all treat each other with respect.  All discipline problems will be dealt with on case-by-case bases.

 

Non-Instructional Routines:

  • Students will enter through the front doors of the arena, closest to the 700 building.
  • Students will have 5 minutes after the tardy bell to change from school clothes to physical education clothes and then report to an assigned area. Failure to do so will result in a tardy.
  • Students need to use the restroom prior to reporting to the assigned area at the beginning of class to cut down on loss instructional time.
  • We are not responsible for lost valuables in the locker room and gym.
  •  Students will have 10 minutes to change back into their school clothes at the end of the period and report to their assigned area.

 

Substitute Teacher Procedure

The students are to conduct themselves in the same manner with a substitute teacher, as they would do so with their regular teacher in the classroom.

Parent Contact

Parents will be contacted through telephone, email and through letters.  Parents may contact the teacher at any time by phone or email with a concern about their child’s education.

 

ID Policy

The teacher will check when students enter class to make sure that ID’s are being worn.  When students go get dressed they can leave their ID’s locked up in their locker due to the safety issues while we are in activities.  When students go to get dressed back out, they are required to place their ID back on before leaving.

 

Tardy Policy Procedure

  • 1-Waring (Last in-Last out)
  • 2-Parent contact (Last in-Last out)
  • 3-5-Sunset school and (Last in-Last out)
  • 6 and up-Referral for Failure to comply
